Cuba Has Shortages of Just About Everything.... Except Condoms. Cubans Get Creative w/Condoms

Boats are illegal in Cuba (I wonder why?), so Cuban fisherman use condoms as floats.
"On this island of shortages and scarcities, the latex condom has uses that stretch far beyond the bedroom. At baseball games, rock concerts and other entertainment events, Cubans blow them up and bat them around the crowd like beach balls. When parents can’t afford birthday party balloons or can’t find them, they unfurl a few “Vigor” brand prophylactics and start puffing. The latex is so strong and supple that kids can even draw faces on them.

The Cuban government sells the Chinesemade rubbers three-for-a-penny at pharmacies and snack bars, cheap enough for anyone to afford. The island has shortages of just about everything else though, thanks to five decades of US sanctions and a ruinous state-run economy. It should come as no surprise, then, that enterprising Cubans have found all sorts of recreational and industrial applications for their condoms that have nothing to do with birth control."

Including being used for fishing (see photo above), read more here.

I stumbled upon some info. about 10 states where a high percentage of employees work for the government. While the statistics didn't surprise me, the states making the list did.

Blaming the US embargo for shortages of anything when the rest of the world trades with Cuba is idiotic. Hell, Canada prides itself on trading with Cuba just to cock a snook at the big, bad US of A.

what did the embargos achive ... hatred from those people. cut the supplies like arms etc not the essentials. See the effect of dollar by allowing US citizens to travel there freely. All those poor cubans will be more than happy to serve at those beautiful beaches .

There was something very similar going on in the Soviet Union.

For the statist left, a child is another mouth to feed and an increased burden on the society. With such an initial assumption, It is easy to see why the left embraces free and unlimited abortion.

Cuba is a world museum of communism, them and N Korea. This is what communism does. Hell on Earth.

The rest of the world is free to trade with Cuba, and does to some extent. Blaming the US for the mess in Cuba is simply stupid. Communists are responsible for the suffering. All the Cubans have to do to achieve huge growth and a decent level of prosperity is ... Stop being stupid.

It's crazy that people think the embargo is the reason for the poverty in Cuba. As if Cuba would turn into Singapore or Taiwan if the embargo didn't exist.

Not allowing boats kills the tourism market there. Other nationalities can go there, but without diving, fishing, jet ski, and boating possibilities, how much interest is there? They do allow some tourist boats, but clearly not as easy to arrange as for almost every beach area in the world.

It's the government there that holds them back. Look at all the corrupt places in Central and South America where there's no embargo, but loads of poverty. Or Haiti the next island over. No embargo, but extreme poverty. While the other half of the island, the Dominican Republic is much better mainly due to a different government.

The embargo hasn't had the intended results, but lifting the embargo won't change the government there either. Only the loss of 2 brothers there may change things.

Quick quiz...who said the following?

in 1960...
"Fulgencio Batista murdered 20,000 Cubans in seven years ... and he turned Democratic Cuba into a complete police state - destroying every individual liberty. Yet our aid to his regime, and the ineptness of our policies, enabled Batista to invoke the name of the United States in support of his reign of terror. Administration spokesmen publicly praised Batista - hailed him as a staunch ally and a good friend - at a time when Batista was murdering thousands, destroying the last vestiges of freedom, and stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the Cuban people, and we failed to press for free elections."

and in 1963...
“I believe that there is no country in the world including any and all the countries under colonial domination, where economic colonization, humiliation and exploitation were worse than in Cuba, in part owing to my country’s policies during the Batista regime. I approved the proclamation which Fidel Castro made in the Sierra Maestra, when he justifiably called for justice and especially yearned to rid Cuba of corruption. I will even go further: to some extent it is as though Batista was the incarnation of a number of sins on the part of the United States. Now we shall have to pay for those sins. In the matter of the Batista regime, I am in agreement with the first Cuban revolutionaries. That is perfectly clear."

Cuba gets most of its food from the US. I realize that most people do not know that, but the US does not have a strict embargo on Cuba. This fact hurts the leftard screed, but those morons can be safely ignored.

I'm confused, I thought self sufficiency was the mantra of the left that trade was bad. Why is the lack of trade here a problem?

As for anonymous, didn't Cheia Pet personally execute 14,000 people???
