Six Ways to Slash Your Health Costs

1) Cut prescription costs, 2) use retail clinics or Teladoc, 3) shop for diagnostic procedures and lab work (ask about cash rates and discounts), 4) medical tourism (including inside the U.S. at cash-only surgery centers like the Surgery Center of Oklahoma), 5) compare insurance options, and 6) become an empowered patient.

Of course, this is most relevant for those with HSAs or those who are spending their own money.

As noted Wal-Mart led the way on prescription costs. But one can do better by insisting that your doctor prescribe a generic unless there is a strong reason not to really #6.
On number 3 Watch for screening test days where the tests are priced more nearly what they cost.
To take #6 on treat the physician as a medical advisor, and do some checking on the web yourself.
I would add #7 fill out advanced directives and medical powers of attorney and talk the issue over with those you name, so that you can avoid getting into a situation of finger pointing between relatives such as the Shavio case. (If she had left clear directions, and said that her husband would make decisions for her, then there would not have been the local version of the lawyers full employment act.
